“As a global organisation, we need standardised global ways of operating: standard points of record, standardised global processes, and a global means of reporting.” Raman Guttridge, Global Human Resources Systems Manager, Catlin
In 2008, FTSE 250-listed specialist insurance company Catlin Group decided that it needed to bring together processes and information from multiple local payroll and information systems.
As a global business, with operations stretching across North America, continental Europe, the UK, and Asia Pacific, the company had come to the conclusion that it required a single global record of its employees, and a single global system for managing reward and remuneration.
“One part of the business was using an outsourced payroll service, while another part was handling payroll in-house on an older, more manually-intensive system,” says Angela Martin, Catlin’s UK payroll manager. “We had two systems—and instead, we recognised that we needed a single system, and a different one.”
A search of the marketplace quickly led to Symatrix, and to its Oracle E-Business Suite managed hosting service. And immediately, says Martin, it was clear that a move to a single, managed hosted Oracle E-Business Suite HCM solution offered significant opportunities for improved efficiency.
“From a purely UK payroll perspective, for instance, there weren’t going to be two systems to run, and two systems to check—instead, there would be one system, covering the same number of employees,” she explains.
“Likewise, when it came to reporting, we would be freed from the chore of manually combining two separate reports into one, and then checking and validating the results. ”Moreover, adds Guttridge, the Oracle E-Business Suite offered HR capabilities that Catlin didn’t presently possess
